I love the 4th of July and celebrating our Independence with family and friends. I love watching the fireworks at night and seeing children’s faces light up as they watch the countless colors fill the sky. I love going to the park and playing ball. It is a fantastic day and one full of memories. What tops it off in my book though is gathering with family while eating some great hamburgers off the grill and delicious sides, such as these Red, White, and Blue Jello Cups.
I don’t know what it is about Jello but it always seems to sneak itself onto the table. Maybe it’s the fact that it is a simple food that has endless preparation possibilities. In this dish specifically blueberry Jello was used and real blueberries were added, while real strawberries were added to the strawberry Jello.
Now one recommendation I would make is that we should have added the darker jello on the bottom of the cup rather than the lighter strawberry color. This would have helped both Jellos maintain their unique colors of dark blue and vibrant red. I would also be patient and let that second layer of jello cool off before pouring it in the cup. That warm jello will melt and mix in with the already chilled jello and you won’t have the clear crisp lines and colors… (Yes, I clearly made that mistake with this batch of jello.)
Now how can you serve Jello without whipped cream? You really can’t. I mean you could if you really wanted to but it’s whipped cream and whipped cream makes everything better. Examples: whipped cream and strawberries, whipped cream and hot chocolate, just eating STRAIGHT WHIPPED CREAM. Need I say more? Now add the whipped cream and put a cherry on top.
Presto you have just made Red, White, and Blue Jello Cups. Now enjoy your 4th of July BBQ with this patriotic side.
- 1 package red jello
- 1 package blue jello
- whipped cream
- red and blue sprinkles (optional)
- Prepare red jello according to package instructions. Pour in bottom of cups. Chill until solid
- Prepare blue jello according to package instructions. Let come to room temp and pour on top of red jello. Chill until solid.
- Spread whipped cream on top of the jello and top with cherries and sprinkles.
